DAY 17: DRIVE SCHNEBLY HILL
For some wonderful views overlooking the Sedona area, drive up Schnebly Hill (Map). If you are in a passenger car (not recommended), it can be a bit rough. You’ll have to pick your way through. Any SUV should be just fine without having to use 4 wheel drive. If you don’t want to try it, Pink Jeep Tours makes tour runs all day long up Schnebly.
The road (FSR 153) climbs over 2,200 feet from Sedona (near HozHo & Hike House) to the top of Mogollon Rim. You will find pull outs for several hiking trails along the drive. Camping is allowed at the top of rim. Schenbly Hill Vista is the destination of most folks. It affords one of the best views in the area.
Be sure to bring your camera and binoculars. You may encounter some of the local wildlife, anything from Elk to Bobcat to Chipmunks.
Directions: (Map) Schnebly Hill Road turns off SR 179 just south of the “Y” intersection in Sedona, next to Oak Creek. The road turns to dirt after about a mile. Schnebly Hill Vista is about 6 miles up the road. If yo continue on for a total of 13 miles, and you’ll hit I-17 . This road, at one time, was the primary way for settlers to get to the market in Flagstaff. Parking requires a Red Rock Pass.
